Ministers left jobless in Accra

Ministers arrived yesterday night in Accra up and ready to deal with the hot issues at the Accra Agenda for Action that negotiators hadn’t managed to agree upon. To their surprise they found out that… they did not have much to negotiate. Not happy about having flown for hours in vain, some of the Ministers want to reopen negotiations to improve the AAA. Whether they’re going to manage to get stronger language in it, it’s yet to be seen.
Unsatisfied about the most likely outcome of the meeting, the EU is considering the possibility of putting out an European statement. In light of the likelihood of a watered down final AAA, a EU agreement which is more ambitious would certainly be a positive by-product of the meeting. It is unclear yet whether the EU is going to dare to be bold and tackle in their statement crucial issues left out from the AAA – such as conditionality and tied aid – and which they had been previously advocating.

That couldn’t have gone down to well,

Why can’t they get past the red tape and deal with the real iksuues at hand, namely starving people who desperately need assistance. The fat cats can politic all they like, and go to bed warm and well-fed, while people are suffering! This is just plain wrong!
